On Sunday, March 4th, Richard Spencer will attend and speak at the Foundation for the Marketplace of Ideas (FMI) conference in Detroit. Spencer will be accompanied by an entourage of notorious fascists. In this article, we’ll introduce you to the white nationalists and groups likely to attend.
Matthew Heimbach (Guest Speaker)
Heimbach has been described by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as the “face of a new generation of white nationalists.”
As a student at the Towson University in Maryland, he founded and started a chapter of the Youth for Western Civilization (YWC), and the White Student Union (WSU). He’s the founder and leader of the Traditional Workers Party (an arm of the National Socialist Movement).
Heimbach’s groups held a series of provocative events on the Towson campus in defense of ‘white rights,’ and patrols to combat what he described as a “black crime wave.”
Since graduating in 2013, he has become a regular on the white nationalist and Neo-Nazi circuit, addressing rallies. He’s gained infamy for assaulting counter demonstrators and was responsible for assaulting an interracial couple in a random attack at a middle Tennessee restaurant in October 2017.
Richard Spencer (Key Note Speaker)
The keynote speaker of the FMI event is Richard Spencer, one of the founders of the alt-right movement, and president of the National Policy Institute white nationalist think tank. Spencer has founded an alt-right media network, and was nationally condemned for leading a rally in Washington D.C. after Trump’s election, in which members raised their arms in Nazi salutes, and declared “Hail Trump.”
He’s also famous for being punched in the face by an anti-fascist demonstrator on inauguration day.
Kyle Bristow (Organizer and Guest Speaker)
Kyle Bristow is the founder and president of the Foundation for the Marketplace of Ideas (FMI). This organization is an alt-right think tank that provides legal representation to a cadre of white nationalist organizers and groups. Bristow purports to be a free speech advocate, but this veneer serves to mask his long held white supremacist ideologies. He authored the white supremacist book “White Apocalypse” in 2010. During his college days at MSU Bristow took over a small conservative group, the local chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, and turned it into a vicious organization that tried to hold a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day,” led a “straight power” rally featuring signs like “End Faggotry,” and held a “Koran desecration contest”.
Cameron Padgett (Guest Speaker)
Cameron Padgett is a campus facilitator who spends his time booking Richard Spencer’s speaking engagements at universities across the United States. Padgett identifies as an “identitarian” and sees segregation as the answer to racial division. The U.S. would be a better place, he says, if every race were relegated to their own corner of the country to live.
Spencer calls him a friend and a “go-getter,” without whom he couldn’t have been able to pull off his uninvited campus tour and spread his message of an all-white nation. He even let Padgett run his Periscope video when his white nationalist movement returned to Charlottesville to protest again, weeks after a young woman died in the protests.
“This wouldn’t be possible without him,” Spencer said.
Jeff Schoep (Probable Attendee)
Jeff Schoep is the leader of the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and a resident of the greater metro Detroit area. The SPLC writes that “Schoep’s group is known for the crudeness of its propaganda, the violence it works hard to provoke, and the faux SS outfits that have caused many other neo-Nazis to deride NSM members as “Hollywood Nazis.”
Schoep published the following on the National Socialist Movement website: “The Constitution was written by white men alone. Therefore, it was intended for whites alone.”
Traditional Workers Party
Founded in 2015 by Matthew Heimbach, the Traditional Workers Party (TWP) is an explicitly white nationalist and white supremacist organization. Members often wear all black, and use a four pronged pitchfork as their emblem. The organization is an affiliate of the National Socialist Movement.
The SPLC notes that the TWP has stated “Now is not the time for unity. It’s not the time for love. It’s a time for disunity and for hate. It’s time to hate the migrant communities harboring this lethal threat. It’s time to hate the (((oligarchs))) who create those communities. And if there’s any hate in your heart remaining, invest it in the fools who are smiling and clapping along with the need for more ‘unity,’ ‘inclusion,’ and ‘love’ in the face of this existential threat to our nations, our peoples, and our future generations.”
Vanguard America is a white nationalist group which trumpets the concept of blood and soil, an idea championed by the Nazis claiming that the inherent features of a people are the land it lives on and its blood, or race. In addition to opposing multiculturalism and feminism, Vanguard America’s manifesto calls for a country free from the influence of international corporations (they claim is led by a rootless group of international Jews) which place profit beyond the interests of our people, or any people.
According to the ADL, the group has posted dozens of fliers on campuses in at least 10 states. Its posters bear slogans like Beware the International Jew and Fascism: The next step for America. In 2017, the group defaced a New Jersey Holocaust memorial with a banner reading (((Heebs will not divide us))). Vanguard flags and signs often bear the fasces, a traditional fascist symbol depicting a bundle of sticks with a protruding axe blade.
National Socialist Movement
The National Socialist Movement (NSM) is an explicitly neo-nazi organization which is notable for its violent anti-Jewish rhetoric, its racist views and its policy which allows members of other racist groups to join NSM.
The SPLC quotes the NSM website, which states ““All non-White immigration must be prevented. We demand that all non-Whites currently residing in America be required to leave the nation forthwith and return to their land of origin: peacefully or by force.”
— “25 Points of American National Socialism,” NSM website”
Founded by Nathan Damigo, Identity Evropa (IE) is a white supremacist group focused on the preservation of “white American culture” and promoting white European identity. IE has been very active with flier campaigns across Michigan and banner drops in cities nationwide in 2017 and 2018.
